ANGELINA COUNTY, TX (KTRE) - A man who said his trailer loaded with metal was stolen was able to follow the trail which led deputies to the arrest of an Etoile man.
James Anthony Tiller, 22, is charged with theft exceeding $1,500.
According to an arrest warrant affidavit, a man contacted the Angelina County Sheriff's Office on April 12 to report that his trailer, loaded with a large amount of metal items, was stolen from his property located in the 1100 block of Old Highway 69 South. He estimated the value of the trailer and medal to be $13,700.
The man said he did not live at the location, so he did not know exactly when the trailer was stolen, but it was there on April 9, the last time he was there.
He said when he discovered the stolen items, he saw the thief did not roll up the jack stand on the trailer far enough and the stand was dragging the ground and left a trail. He followed the trail to Guy's Scrap Metal on U.S. 69 South. The investigator contacted the scrap metal yard and confirmed the trailer was still loaded and was sold to them on April 11. The workers at Guy's felt something was wrong when they saw two car lifts on the trailer so they did not scrap it out.
Authorities concluded that Tillery stole the trailer. Investigator Mike Jones said Tillery was due a probation visit so he waited for him during the visit and made the arrest on Thursday.
