More than 100 walk in second annual "Heart Scoot" to raise awareness about heart disease

LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) - Gearing up for the Hoe Down this morning—the Angelina County Heart Alliance held their second annual "Heart Scoot" through downtown Lufkin.

More than 100 participants walked one to three miles to help fund education and resources in Angelina County, on the ill effects of cardiovascular disease and stroke.

President of the Angelina County Heart Alliance, Charity Fennell says heart disease is the number one killer in the nation, also taking a huge toll on East Texans.

"There are some things you can't change such as age, heredity, genetics, but the things you can change are diet and exercise. Those are the two big number one things and also stop smoking," said Fennell.

Last year, the Heart Alliance raised over $15,000. They hope to surpass that goal this year. The funds will also help provide community facilities with proper resources they need such as AED's and CPR rallies.
