NACOGDOCHES, TX (KTRE) - Some Nacogdoches and Lufkin firefighters are home after fighting fires across the state of Texas. Some are eager to return.
They're helping out the U.S. and State forest services on as many as five wildfires, mostly in West Texas.
They made the long drives in city and volunteer fire trucks.
The firefighters quickly learn firefighting is handled a bit differently in the wide open spaces.
"Out there, they don't even use water to fight fires. They fight fires with fire. They lite backfires, plow dozer lines. That's pretty much all we did the whole time," said Mark Lee, a Nacogdoches firefighter.
"It's a lot of hand tools. It's hard work, but you got to get out there to help those guys and assist them with whatever they need," shared Cody Best, a Nacogdoches firefighter.
The firefighters say they're ready to go back. Some may return as early as Tuesday.
