Diboll ISD terminates five teacher contracts thanks to impending cuts

Posted: Updated:

(KTRE) -  It's the fear of the unknown.  The unknown amount of funding East Texas school districts stand to lose after the state legislation finally decides on the budget in Austin.

For Diboll ISD, the unknown translate into a difference between $200,000 and $2 million in cuts to their school district.

Superintendent Gary Martel says even without real numbers, there's a strict timeline for the school board to make decisions on personnel, including teachers.

That's why five teachers contracts were terminated for next school year.

Martel says it was solely based on student numbers and their schedules.

"These are fine people, wonderful people. In my 24 years its been one of the toughest things I've ever had to do. We're also a business, and a school district," said Martel.

He also says if the cuts, ultimately aren't as deep, the school district will consider hiring them back on.
