Lady Roadrunners End Season with Losses to No. 5 Blinn College

The Angelina College Lady Roadrunners ended their 2011 season with a pair of losses to the 5th-ranked junior college team in the nation, falling 7-0 and 10-0 to Blinn College Wednesday at Roadrunner Complex in Lufkin.

Having already been eliminated from post-season contention a week ago, the Lady ‘Runners were up against a team picked by many to win the conference tournament scheduled to begin next week in Mount Pleasant.

The Lady Buccaneers offered a lethal combination of shut-down pitching and offensive firepower, with Blinn starting pitchers Kaci Federwisch and Jocelyn Tacquard teaming up for 14 shutout innings. In the opener, Federwisch allowed a pair of first-inning singles to AC's Lauren Davis and Kayla Bryan – then proceeded to retire the next 20 Lady Roadrunners in order.

The Lady Bucs spotted Federwisch to a 4-0 lead in their very first at-bat, pounding out four doubles and a single in the top of the first inning. Michelle Downing drove in two runs with a two bagger after Sara Vaughn, Brittany Arredondo and Alex Yarbrough doubled in the inning. Blinn tacked on three more runs scattered over the fourth, fifth and sixth innings to take the 7-0 win.

Blinn then tossed Tacquard at the Lady Roadrunners with pretty much the same result. Tacquard allowed just four hits while striking out nine in going the distance in the 10-0 win. Taylor Sells accounted for two of those singles, and Bryan and Kristen Curlin added the other two hits for AC.

Lady Buc Yarbrough capped a huge day at the plate, driving in five runs – she'd collected two RBI in the opener – with a three-run homer, a solo shot and an RBI single. Vaughn, Arredondo and Jalyn Erwin also drove in runs for Blinn.

The Lady Roadrunners end the season with a record of 25-29. The team's 10 sophomores ended their two-year careers at AC with a total of 58 wins for a program in just its third year in existence.

Sophomore Day ceremonies bid farewell to Taylor Jaynes, Curlin, Amanda Vincent, Brittney Smith, Lauren Davis, Brittani Stone, Randi Rascoe, Paige Darwin, Sells and trainer Courtney Ford.
