ATV Operators Need To Be Clear On Laws And Safety

By Stuart Burson

When it comes to ATV safety, riders must be aware of the laws in the state of Texas. Many operators, including minors, ride them not only on private land but along the side of highways as well. DPS spokesman Greg Sanches says that ATV's are illegal on any kind of public roadway. In fact, ATV's can't even be ridden on the shoulder or grass beside the highway. If you are caught riding your ATV on the highway, you could face up to a $500 fine.

To help riders become aware of the laws and how to operate their ATV's safely, many dealers are offering a rider safety course to all of their customers. The ATV Institute recommends all riders attend an approved safety class, never let kids ride unsupervised, wear the right safety gear, never carry or ride as a passenger and ride only on designated trails.
