In Gilmer, Longview's Peppy Blount will be honored with the commemoration of American Legion Post 320, which will bear his name.
Blount, who died just short of a year ago, was widely known as a telethon host, legislator, football star and author. He was also a World War II hero.
Longview Attorney R.E. Peppy Blount was only 18 when he left home to fly B25 bombers in the South Pacific, often flying so low his props turned green from clipping grass blades. Blount and his crew of men barely past their teenage years, reeked havoc on the Japanese.
Nine out of ten men from Blount's 345th bomb group didn't make it back.
After the war ended, Blount returned home, played football at the University of Texas, and became the youngest man ever elected to the Texas House of Representatives. He then became the Gregg County Judge, author of numerous books, and the country's longest serving muscular dystrophy telethon master of ceremonies ... except for Jerry Lewis himself.
While his book "We Band of Brothers" was about his experiences in WWII, Blount wrote about his football years in his book "Mamas Don't Let Your Babies Grow Up to Play Football."
But perhaps Blount's fourth book best describes his life as a father, grandfather, football star, telethon host, author and war hero. It's called "All Things Considered ... It's Been a Great Life."
Those whose lives Blount touched feel blessed as well. The ceremony for the American Legion Post 320 Permanent Chapter and Post Name Commemoration is scheduled for Saturday in Gilmer. It will be at 2:30 pm with a reception following at the DAV Reception Hall.
