LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) - A Lufkin ISD teacher appreciation banquet which members of the community were planning to honors the school district's educators has been canceled.
LISD parent Robbie Walker, who took on the cause after she found out the district had to drop the annual event due to a lack of funding, said Monday that administrators asked her to pursue the event for next year.
"We wouldn't be able to generate enough interest in such short notice this year," Superintendent Roy Knight said in a telephone interview. "We didn't want to waste time that members of our community would put into it by not ensuring it had the kind of attendance that it deserves."
Walker said she understood the school's positioning and would look to planning the event for next year.
"We would like to thank the community for rallying behind this organization and helping make things possible," Walker said in an email statement. "I will keep you posted on further meetings for the upcoming school year."
"We look forward to having this kind of event next year," Knight said.
