2 die in separate East Texas drownings

ANGELINA COUNTY, TX (KTRE) -

Two men are dead in separate drownings emergency officials responded to over the weekend.

The first occurred Saturday around 5 p.m. in Angelina County on Lake Sam Rayburn, when Jason Heath Olds, 41, of Kirbyville, jumped off a pontoon boat near the State Highway 147 bridge. Texas Parks and Wildlife Capt. Shawn Phillips said Olds began having trouble swimming, went under water and never came back up.

Phillips said they recovered Olds' body around 5 p.m. Saturday. While Olds was on the boat with other people, Phillips said there is no indication of suspicious activity in the drowning.

The second occurred Sunday near the U.S. Highway 190 bridge in Newton County on Sabine River. Capt. Tom Jenkins said three men were on the Texas side of the river and wanted to swim across it to the Louisiana side. Two of them made it across, but one did not, Jenkins said.

Jenkins said the body was recovered around 8:30 a.m. Monday. The identity of the man who died is being withheld until the report is completed and next of kin has been notified.

"I've seen a lot of drowning there," Jenkins said. "Based on what I know, I wouldn't advise [swimming across the river]."
