Parks and Wildlife officials have identified the man who drowned Sunday in the Sabine River as James Russell Whitney, 19, of Nederland.
According to the report, Whitney was wading at the end of a sand bar with another man and woman when all three slipped into a drop-off in the river.
About six onlookers managed to save the other two but could not help Whitney.
The report shows Whitney drowned around 9:25 a.m. on Sunday and the body was recovered at 1:40 p.m.
