Nacogdoches Police make 1st arrest in hat robbery

NACOGDOCHES, TX (KTRE) - Nacogdoches Police have made the first arrest in the investigation of a hat salesman's robbery on Tuesday afternoon.

Fredrick O'Keith Johnson, 21, of Nacogdoches, is charged with aggravated robbery. He was also booked in the Nacogdoches County Jail on a charge of assault by threat.

According to the police report, Johnson and two other men approached a man selling hats out of the trunk of his car on the 200 block of Stone Street at 4:35 p.m., acting like they were going to buy a hat. Two of the men then pulled out shotguns and took all of the hats, according to the report. All three ran away and the victim chased him in his car.

One of the suspects fired his shotgun at the victim, striking the car. The suspects then fled the scene in a vehicle down the street.

Police arrested Johnson at a residence in the 1600 block of Virginia Avenue on Wednesday. According to the report, officers were dispatched there in reference to a disturbance and they arrested him on an outstanding Nacogdoches Municipal Court warrant for assault by threat.

A short time later, police identified him as a suspect in the robbery, according to the report.

Police spokesman Sgt. Greg Sowell said the case remains under investigation, with further arrests a possibility.
