SAN AUGUSTINE COUNTY, TX (KTRE) -

A San Augustine County grand jury has charged a duo with sexual assault after the sheriff's office alleged the daughter helped her father conduct a months-long relationship with a 16-year-old girl.

Billy Gene Childress, 54, and Margaret Ann Childress, 21, each of San Augustine, are charged in the crime.

Chief Deputy Gary Cunningham said the sheriff's office began investigating the case when officials at a school in the county reported rumors of the girl having a sexual relationship with an adult.

Authorities conducted an investigation and determined the rumors were valid and collected evidence in the case, Cunningham said. They then interviewed the victim and Cunningham said she admitted to the relationship.

Cunningham said the relationship began in early 2010. Margaret Childress would pick up the girl from school on Fridays and take her to her and her father's house. Billy Childress would have sex and sleep in his bed at nights and Margaret Childress would bring the girl back to school on Mondays, Cunningham said.

"The parents believed her story that she was staying at a friend's for the weekend," Cunningham said.

A grand jury indicted the pair on May 9. The sheriff's office charged them with the crime the weekend before and both bailed out of the San Augustine County Jail prior to the indictment.
