SAN AUGUSTINE COUNTY, TX (KTRE) -

The San Augustine County Sheriff's Office is investigating the shooting of a man who is accused of having a sexual relationship with a teenager.

According to Chief Deputy Gary Cunningham, deputies responded to a shooting at 1 a.m. Sunday on FM 1751. Cunningham said they discovered Billy Childress, 54, had been shot through the shoulder on his driveway.

The call to 911 came from Childress' daughter, Margaret Childress, 21, who was present at the time of the shooting, Cunningham said.

Deputies recovered the bullet at the scene and are investigating the shooting.

Margaret Childress has not named a suspect, Cunningham said.

Margaret Childress is also charged with sexual assault, as she is charged with driving a 16-year-old girl to her father's house so that he could have a sexual relationship with her.

Both deny the father had a sexual relationship with the teenager, saying she only came to the house to babysit Margaret's children.

"I had a friend of mine that told me if I ever needed a babysitter they knew somebody that could babysit," Margaret said in an interview from a Nacogdoches hospital on Wednesday.

Margaret was with her father at the hospital, who is recovering from the shooting.

"Through text message and telephone she called me and asked me things," Billy said from his hospital bed. "The reason she had my number was whenever she babysitted for my daughter in case of an emergency."

Billy said two men came to his house, asking him for gas. They then recognized him as the suspect in the sexual assault case and shot him, he said.

Cunningham said in a telephone interview on Wednesday that they are investigating retaliation as a possible motive, but for now are more concerned with taking statements from the witnesses.

"The daughter tells us her father is having medical issues right now and so we can't speak to him," Cunningham said. "We have asked her to give a statement and she has refused to do so. She is not cooperating with law enforcement. We will be making an effort to speak to him."
