ALTO, TX (KTRE) -

An Alto man is in ICU after resisting arrest Sunday afternoon.

After being arrested, Elmo Thacker, 54, was re-routed from the jail to the ICU for injuries.

Sunday afternoon, Thacker was stopped by an Alto police officer for having an unrestrained child in the car.

According to Alto Police Chief Charles Barron, when Thacker got out of the car he admitted to drinking earlier.

When the officer tried to search his pockets, Thacker resisted, causing an altercation.

He was arrested and taken to the Cherokee County Jail, but was quickly sent to the hospital.

The sheriff's office says Thacker had sustained 3 broken ribs and one was floating.

He is charged with assaulting a peace officer and drug possession.
