Sports Minute: Here is the latest Texas sports news from The Associated Press

HOUSTON (AP) - Alex Bregman hit a game-ending two-run double with one out in the ninth inning and the Houston Astros beat the Tampa Bay Rays 5-4 to match a franchise record with their 12th straight win. Houston trailed 4-0 after three innings but cut the lead to one entering the ninth. Houston also won 12 straight in 2004 and 1999. The Astros will go for No. 13 on Tuesday with ace Justin Verlander on the mound.

NEW YORK (AP) - Gerrit Cole, Corey Kluber and Clayton Kershaw are among the many big league pitchers benefiting from a puzzling baseball paradox _ in an era when pitchers are throwing harder than ever, they're maximizing success by using fewer fastballs. Why is the hardest-throwing generation of pitchers leaning so much on curveballs and changeups? Most aces cite the offensive emphasis on hitting flyballs, but Indians righty Trevor Bauer thinks the uptick in offspeed is more than a passing trend.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - Bartolo Colon earned his 244th win, passing Hall of Famer Juan Marichal for the most by a pitcher born in the Dominican Republic, and the Texas Rangers beat the skidding Kansas City Royals 6-3. Adrian Beltre hit a three-run homer for the Rangers, who won their third straight. The 45-year-old Colon allowed three runs in six innings. Only right-hander Dennis Martinez has more victories among pitchers from Latin America. Martinez, a native of Nicaragua, won 245 games.

HOUSTON (AP) - The Houston Astros have extended the contract of general manager Jeff Luhnow through the 2023 season and added president of baseball operations to his title. Luhnow, who was hired by the Astros on Dec. 7, 2011, led a remarkable turnaround in Houston, helping the Astros move from a 100-loss team to winning the World Series last season.
