Peter BuschWeekend Anchor/Reporter, KPHO CBS 5 News
PHOENIX Randall Craig was a prosecutor in the Maricopa County Attorney's Office under Rick Romley. Now, he has a practice in Scottsdale and is defending Mark Goudeau, the alleged Baseline Killer.
Before opening statements on Monday, Craig sat down for an interview with CBS 5. Here are some of the highlights.
Q: Why did you take this case?
A: You know, some days I wish I hadn't. It's a very challenging case as you may know and there's going to be a lot of evidence presented, a lot of witness testimony, a lot of commitment has gone into this case. I guess I took it because of the challenge.

Q: What is the most high-profile case you've had as a defense attorney before this?
A: We just finished up the (Donald) Delahanty case about a year-and-a-half ago and that was a very important case for the community. As you may know, Mr. Delahanty was charged with killing Phoenix police officer David Uribe. That was a very challenging case as well.
Q: Do you think Mark Goudea can get a fair trial in the Valley?
A: I do, I do. Of course that's to be seen, but I'm very confident in the judicial system, in the judge that we have, in the jury that we've picked.
Q: Has Mark Goudea looked you in the eye and said "I did not do this?"
A: I can't get into anything that my client has told me because of client-attorney confidence, but I will tell you that he's very confident in his innocence.
Q: Will there be any surprises in the trial?
A: I don't think there's going to be any real surprises. I think the surprise is going to come in how the evidence is presented and what effect that evidence is going to have. We'll have to wait and see what is presented on June 6.
