Diboll ISD trustees decided they did not need to look far in hiring a new athletic director and approved the hiring of Shane Adair, who has been on the staff the past three years as a teacher and coach.
Adair replaces Thomas Sheppard, who resigned to go into a family business.
Adair has served as the offensive coordinator for the football team, head powerlifting coach and the assistant track coach. He also head the alternative education program, the discipline program for Diboll ISD.
In addition to being athletic director, Adair will also be the head football coach.
"We have had about 50 people call about this job," Superintendent Gary Martel said. "But I told them I would not call any of them back until we decided we would not hire someone internally. It turned out we had three excellent candidates in-house."
Bruce Bolden and Edd Trotter also applied for the position, Martel said.
"Everyone is in support of Shane, and the staff felt like they could work well together," Martel said. "Even the other two candidates supported him. In fact, all three candidates were supportive of each other."
Adair will be allowed to hire someone to work as a coach and teacher at the district, Martel said.
Diboll trustees approved the hiring during Tuesday night's meeting.
