Nacogdoches judged as friendliest city

NACOGDOCHES, TX (KTRE) - Jason and Nikki Wynn have a dream job. Their winning video, which explains why Jason always has a camera going, allows them to meet the friendliest people in the USA.

"All right. Good," said Jason as he walked into the Nacogdoches Convention and Visitors Bureau where he was greeted by an enthusiastic welcoming committee.

Nacogdoches greeters decked out in Nacogdoches friendly T-shirts caught Jason's eye. He filmed ending with a satisfied, "Sweet".

The Wynn's are showered with gifts. Cowboy hats, a Texas size belt buckle and lots of Texas bling came their way today. That's Nacogdoches friendly, but what are they really looking for?

"When you look at somebody in the eye, you can truly tell if they are friendly and if they are coming off as real or phony," explained Jason. "That's kind of the main judge for us."

You don't have to tell that to Gracie, the downtown mascot. The golden retriever is friendly to everyone who walks into her owner's store. She greeted the couple with a bark and a wagging tail.

And while not every Nacogdoches visitor gets to ride around town in Bertha, the historic fire engine, the gesture is extremely genuine.

"Being hospitable and giving a friendly wave or helping somebody out that you don't know, I think that's the definition of friendly," said Samantha Mora, the CVB's community relations director.

"It's a feeling and I think it's just treating everyone like you want to be treated," shared Sarah O'Brien, the Nacogdoches Main Street Director.

There are some surprises along the way. The Wynn's would have never guessed the Marx Brothers comedy act got started in Nacogdoches. They received the mini history lesson at "The Runaway Mule", a downtown shop.

"I grew up in a small town and once you've seen one you've seen them all, but it's really not true," said Nikki Wynn. "There are so many different communities with each and every one has their own character and their own feel."

It will be a tough decision no doubt, but once this couple leaves Nacogdoches, they should be satisfied knowing it's a place where friendly comes naturally.

You can follow the Wynn's travels at   The winner will be announced on July 22nd. The top towns in five categories will be highlighted in the 2013 Rand McNally Road Atlas, as well as on USA Today's travel site.
