LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) – Lufkin detectives are tracking a shooter involved in an altercation that left one man wounded Monday night.
Tuesday afternoon police released an arrest warrant for Cornius Deunte Kirkland, 22, of Lufkin for aggravated assault.
Around 10 p.m. police responded to a call reporting a disturbance at 411 West Grove Avenue. When officers arrived, they found Andre Castle, 23, lying in the driveway of the residence, with a single gunshot wound to the thigh area of his left leg, according to a police report.
Witnesses told police that the victim had a verbal altercation with another man and that the suspect used a handgun to shoot the victim once, the report stated.
One witness told police prior to the shooting, Kirkland was at the residence accusing Castle of stealing a mobile telephone. The witness stated that Kirkland left after losing a fight with Castle, but returned about 20 minutes later, got out of a car, shot the victim with a handgun and then fled the area.
It is not known how badly the victim was injured, however, the report stated he was taken by ambulance from the scene to Memorial Health System of East Texas.
Police were able to identify the accused shooter from witness accounts. Witnesses also said the suspect fled the scene before officers got there. No arrest has been made, however, Kirkland is aware of the outstanding arrest warrant, a police news release stated.
