NACOGDOCHES, TX (KTRE) – Stephen F. Austin State University has reeled in a national championship.
The duo of Ryan Watkins and Andrew Upshaw are the kings of college bass fishing.
The SFA team beat out 36 other colleges in Arkansas over the weekend to claim the national title. The Lumberjacks held off Auburn in the final. It was an emotional win for the two friends who finally could say, "We're number one."
"I have tried to win a national championship for the past couple of years, it is hard enough to win one tournament, to win the national championship it is breathtaking. It is an honor to represent the school and my friends and family," said Upshaw.
These guys do not have cheerleaders. They do not have rowdy fans. It is not even a varsity sport, nonetheless, these guys have pulled off one of the ultimate of honors, a national championship.
In addition, Upshaw has qualified for the BassMasters Classic, which is considered to be the Super Bowl of fishing. That competition will be held next February. Upshaw is the first college fisherman to ever qualify for the pro event.
