A Lufkin Police Department investigation into child pornography on a computer reported from a Lufkin business has resulted in the arrest of a Lufkin man.

David Allen Smith, 67, is charged with possession of child pornography.

The investigation began on July 6 after an employee at Best Buy, located in the 4500 block of South Medford Drive, reported to police that they discovered files on a computer hard drive that had file names that insinuated child pornography.

According to Det. Otis Almond, Smith's wife brought the hard drive to the store to have files transferred to a new hard drive. The employee called police and reported the suspicious filed. Almond said neither the employee nor the responding police officer opened the files, but the officer took the hard drive.

Almond said he executed a search warrant on the hard drive on Thursday and found pornographic images of children.

Almond interviewed Smith on Tuesday and said that he confessed to having the pornographic images. Almond arrested Smith on the charge the same day.

Almond said he is not through with the investigation and still has to conduct a more thorough search of the hard drive.

The Best Buy Geek Squad says they don't go look at files when working on computers, but if they're backing up a hard drive they have to check on it.

"We don't just plug it up and hit go. On the system we have back there we make sure it continues every ten minutes or so. We go and check make sure this is copying correctly from place A to place B," said Gerald Welch, Geek Squad Manager.

Welch says it's their policy to report suspicious activity to law enforcement.
