Police investigate boy testing positive for cocaine at Lufkin hospital

LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) -

Lufkin Police are investigating possible criminal charges after a teen-aged boy tested positive for cocaine at a Lufkin hospital.

According to the police report, the mother took the 13-year-old boy to the hospital because he had been suffering a headache for several days.

Medical tests showed the boy tested positive for cocaine and barbiturate. The mother admitted to giving the boy Xanax, an anti-anxiety medication, to treat the headache but said she did not know how cocaine got in his system. She did say a member of her extended family is on cocaine and the boy and that family member had both been to the grandmother's house.

Lt. David Young said the boy seemed genuinely baffled by the positive test.

"The family does have a history with CPS on this kind of thing," Young said. "It could be the hospital test was wrong or maybe the boy himself could have taken cocaine. That's why we are investigating it."

Young said criminal activity could also be involved with the mother giving the Xanax, for which the boy did not have a prescription.
