LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) -

The Angelina County District Attorney's Office has dropped a charge against a former Lufkin nursing home worker accused of abusing a patient.

Court records show the charge was dismissed on July 19, due to witnesses being no longer willing to cooperate.

Lufkin Police arrested Sherree Denise James, 44, of Lufkin, in September 2010. A police report alleged James, an employee of Grace Care Nursing Home, located at 504 North John Redditt Drive, hit a patient five times, then twisted her ear and pulled her hair.

The witnesses said James told them, "the way you control this resident is to bend her thumb back to her wrist if she gets out of control." The two witnesses got the victim away from James and reported the abuse to the administrator.

Prosecuting attorney Art Bauereiss said he did not know why the witnesses decided not to testify.

"We had two eyewitnesses and we can't get either one of them to cooperate now," he said.
