BEAUMONT, TX (KTRE) -

A man alleged to be one of the area's most prolific meth cooks is now on house arrest, following a U.S. District Court hearing Thursday evening.

David Arthur Dunman, 52, is federally charged with 66 counts related to manufacturing meth.

Dunman's attorney, Al Charanza, filed a motion requesting Dunman's release until his trial, which is scheduled for Sept. 12.

Charanza said in a telephone interview Friday morning that U.S. prosecutors opposed the motion, putting an FBI agent on the stand.

Dunman's mother took the stand Thursday evening to argue why Dunman should be released.

"The judge told us it was really close decision, but decided to put him on house arrest," Charanza said.

In Charanza's motion, he argued that Dunman has not criminal record prior to the offenses he is charged with and the case does not involve violence. He stated Dunman has not been able to receive his daily medication for depression and he also needed his antibiotics for an extracted tooth.

Charanza also stated that Dunman is behind on child support payments and needed to go back to work as a carpenter to get caught up.

Even though Dunman was released from jail, Charanza said the house arrest limits will keep him from being able to work.

"But this is surely better than being in custody," Charanza said. "This gives him a chance to spend time with his family before he goes to trial."

Dunman and three women, Deana Sunshine Turner, Jennifer Jon Holliday and Crystal Ware Keisler are named in a July 20 indictment accusing them of buying pseudophedrine from various stores in the area and using it to cook meth.

Also on Thursday, Lufkin Police arrested Louis Ray Loving, 27, of Lufkin, on a federal warrant from a separate indictment. Loving is accused, along with 12 others, of also buying pseudophedrine from various stores in the area and using it to cook meth. Police records show he was put under arrest after he turned himself in at the Angelina County Jail.
