The Stephen F. Austin football team began practices early Friday morning. The Lumberjacks are picked to win the Southland conference for a third year in a row.
That is no surprise since the team is returning 10 offensive starters from last season. However, the one missing starter just so happens to be the Walter Payton award winner and clear cut leader of this team from 2010, Jeremy Moses.
The Lumberjacks now turn to two quarterbacks without a lot of experience to fill that void. Brady Attaway and Dalton Williams say they are excited to if and when coach J.C. Harper makes his choice for the starter.
" we lost a leader, but me and Dalton know the offense really well," said Ottawa. "Which ever one of us is playing I think we are going to be successful. One of us is going to have to show up and out work the other, so we will see what happens in fall camp."
There is no leader after day one. Each quarterback split the reps evenly with the first squad. While each quarterback would know doubt like to know where they stand, Williams says he doesn't let the rotation bother him.
"I don't worry about that. I just go out every day and get one rep at a time and one play at a time," says Williams. "I just keep leading this offense and this team and let all that take care of itself."
No announcement date has been set by coach Harper. The Lumberjacks open the season against McMurry on September 1st, at Homer Bryce stadium.
