LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) - Lufkin Police arrested a man and recovered a retired Texas ranger's stolen pistol during a traffic stop Friday afternoon.

Cpl. Nick Malone said officers pulled over Mercury Grand Marquis on the 700 block of Persimmon Avenue at 3:22 p.m. Anthony A. Colquitt, 20, who was a passenger, jumped out of the car and began running away. An officer caught up to him and Colquitt fought with him but officers managed to place him under arrest.

During the arrest, officers recovered a Smith & Wesson Bodyguard 380, which had been reported stolen earlier this week from a retired Texas ranger.

Colquitt is charged with evading arrest, assault on a public servant, failure to identify and theft of firearm.

Retired Texas Ranger Pete Maskunas confirmed Saturday morning that it was his pistol that was stolen. He said someone stole his Toyota Camry from his residence on Saturday, by breaking into another vehicle in the driveway and finding a set of keys for the Camry.

Maskunas said police found the car on Tuesday.

"I really appreciate them, they stayed after it the whole time," Maskunas said.
