Late Tax-Free Weekend not discouraging back-to-school shoppers

LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) - Tax free weekend is in full effect as last minute shoppers are scurrying to get the best back-to-school deals.

Karen Mayo, a mom of three, already shopped for her kids. But, she says she couldn't pass up tax free savings.

"My kids started last week. We're from out of town, so I'm doing some extra last minute shopping," said Mayo.

Most of the Saturday morning shoppers consisted of those looking to save on back-to-school.

"Uniforms for the kids."

When they add up the cost of school supplies, uniforms, backpacks, and other things, parents are looking to get a break.

"We still have school supplies we have to buy. It's mostly because of school. They need a lot of things," said student, Jesus Gutierrez.

Target says they love to see these last minute bargain hunters.

"A lot of them are taking advantage of the great sales that we have. And, we have a new ad that starts tomorrow, along with the tax free. So, guests are definitely looking for bargains. And, I don't think the fact that it's last minute is going to stop them from coming in to take advantage of those deals," said Lufkin Target Store Manager, Kris Hoepfner.

Some were scared that by waiting until the last minute, all the items would be gone.

"It looks pretty stocked up, so I think we're going to be good," said 10th grader, Lauren Griffith.

JC Penney and Target say they've anticipated this weekend, so they had plenty of time to stock up for their guests.

"I love to see shoppers in the store. That's what I live for. The busier, the better. I just love it," said Lufkin JC Penney Store Manager, Clara Ainsworth.

Luckily, shoppers can shop till they drop all night long.
