Former Nacogdoches office worker sentenced for federal tax fraud

BEAUMONT, TX (KTRE) -

An Allen, Texas woman has been sentenced in federal court for committing tax fraud.

Cynthia Watts Riggins, 48, was sentenced to 30 months in prison. Riggins appeared before United States District Judge, Ron Clark, on August 22nd.

According to information in court, from 1998 to 2008, Riggins was employed as the office manager for McLean Orthopedics in Nacogodches, where she embezzled more than $1 million.

According to the district court, Riggins failed to report the embezzled funds as taxable income.

She pleaded guilty to filing a false tax return for 2005 in March.

Riggins was ordered to pay $1,224,801.76 in restitution to her former employer, McLean Orthopedics and the Internal Revenue Service.

The case is being investigated by the Criminal Investigations Division-Internal Revenue Service, the United States Postal Inspector, and the Nacogdoches Police Department.
