LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) - It's a rivalry that stretches beyond coaches, players, and UIL district limits. Lufkin versus John Tyler is a game that is huge no matter what classification each school is in.
This huge game also happens to fall into week one this year. Head coach John Outlaw says it wouldn't matter what week it was in, this is a huge game.
"You get chill bumps when you play John Tyler, when you play Lee, when you play Longview," said Outlaw. "When you play Kingwood or Conroe there are no chill bumps. Obviously we have had great rivalries over the years long before I was here and hopefully long after I'm here."
Both teams are replacing a lot of graduated talent but that doesn't mean you shouldn't expect to see fireworks this Friday at Abe Martin Stadium.
"It's a big rivalry. They don't like us, we don't like them," said offensive lineman Lawton Trekell. "It is going to be a battle all night. We will see who is more conditioned, who is tougher, and who wants it more."
