LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) -

A scary episode during a routine surgery has a Lufkin mother of two in a medically induced coma, with family and friends waiting for her to wake up and the surrounding community offering their support.

Courtney Capps Shumway, 33, went into the surgery last Tuesday in Shreveport. Her body reacted to the anesthesia and stopped her heart. Doctors sedated her to protect her heart and now family members are waiting for her to wake up to see how she will be.

"There are two battles here," said her father, Mike Capps. "We have to get her strong enough now, then see how she is functioning on the neurological side. We think she hears us, because she stirs and moves when we talk to her."

In the meantime, doctors are running tests to check her progress while the community is rallying around her family. Several prayer services have been held in the community and friends are showing their support in unique ways, like switching their Facebook profile pictures to a photo of Shumway.

"It's been unbelievable," Capps said. "The amount of calls and emails we received is constant. Someone's phone is ringing all the time."

Capps describes his daughter as someone who involves herself in something all the time. She never met a stranger he said.

"I'll tell you what, I've lived in this city my whole life and what they're doing for us doesn't surprise me," Capps said. "'Thank you' just doesn't get it done."

Anyone who is praying for the Shumway family can call a prayer pager at 936-633-3004 as a way to encourage the family.

Friends have designed T-shirts to raise awareness for the family and to raise money to cover medical and travel expenses. Anyone interested in buying a shirt should send an email to tommyandemily@sbcglobal.net.

Capps said anyone who wants updates on his daughter can send a Facebook friend request to his son, Cody Capps.
