Space Heaters Can Keep You Warm But Could They Be Dangerous?

Whether your's is electric, gas or just a fireplace, everyone has their own way of staying warm, but every year hundreds of families end up out in the cold because of heater related fires. Fire fighters say getting your heating system checked out is always a good idea before cold weather comes.

Steve English said, "Be sure that it's clean, get it checked out to make sure everything is working properly and there's nothing that has gotten into it over the year that might start a fire in your duct work."

Often times space heaters are pointed to as fire hazards. English says keeping your space heater away from things like drapes will help prevent a fire, but fire isn't the only danger.

English said, "If you're going to use a space heater use it in a well ventilated area and have carbon monoxide detectors in the room that it's going to be used at."

The carbon monoxide detectors we checked out ranged from 25 to 45 dollars and some could even detect other deadly gases in your home. It's a small price to pay to protect your home and the ones you love.
