LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) – The famous glowing purple LP sign that towers over Abe Martin Stadium is coming down.
Work crews removed the stadium fixture Friday morning. There is no decision yet on where the Lufkin landmark will go, but school administrators promise it will be placed prominently so that it can be seen from Loop 287.
The sign had to be taken down so that repairs could be made to the stadium. Superintendent Roy Knight said after 39 years the stadium needs a facelift.
They are starting with six steel light poles surrounding the stadium which are rusting from the inside. "Though not life-threatening to anyone yet, they are to the point of no return, they'll have to be replaced and we will need to act pretty expeditiously on this," said Knight.
Replacing the lights will come at an estimated $400,000.
Administrators are looking at an additional $350,000 to fix the stadium.
