LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) - A Lufkin Police officer arrested a man early Saturday after he reported catching him driving recklessly down city streets.
Antonio Cordero, 21, of Lufkin, is charged with child endangerment and no driver's license.
According to the report, a reporter was responding to a call at 12:05 a.m. when he was almost hit by a reckless driver in a gray Ford Mustang. The officer reported the driver was traveling approximately 70 to 80 miles per hour and nearly lost control of the car. The officer quickly turned around to catch the car and saw him turn quickly off of First Street onto Conn Street at such a high speed that it slid sideways again and almost ran into a large ditch, according to the report.
The car continued on Conn Street and the officer caught up to it as it turned onto Denman Avenue. It stopped in the parking lot of the 300 block of East Denman Avenue. The officer walked to the car and saw a two-year-old child in the back seat without a proper seat or seatbelt.
The officer arrested Cordero on the charges.
Cordero's wife was also in the car and told the officer that Cordero was actually trying to get away from the officer. The officer noticed an LPD traffic citation inside the car that was issued to Cordero in June 2011 for no driver's license and unrestrainted child.
The officer called for a wrecker to take the car and then took Cordero to the jail.
Cordero was released from the jail on Saturday on a $5,000 bail bond.
