$1M bond set in kidnapping, murder case in SW AR

HORATIO, AR (KSLA) -

The man accused of kidnapping then killing a southwest Arkansas store clerk made his first court appearance Monday morning.

A Pike County judge set a $1M bond for 25-year-old Cody Griffin on the charges of robbery and kidnapping of 19-year-old Wendy Zapata Hernandez of DeQueen. No bond amount was set on the murder charge

Investigators say they were first notified something was amiss when a customer reported finding the front door to Selena's on Main Street in Horatio wide open, with no one inside. The local Dish TV retail store was ransacked, the safe open and empty.

Sevier County Sheriff Monte Stringfellow says surveillance video reveals what happened, showing Griffin enter the store and grab Hernandez from behind the counter.

Police say Griffin fled with Hernandez in her car.  State Police and Bowie County Sheriff's helicopters searched, but it was a call about a suspicious man walking down a county road in his underwear that led police to the arrest.  They say Griffin told them where they would find the car, which they did around 1:30 p.m. in a wooded area near Beacon Hill, just north of Horatio.

Hernandez' body was found in the trunk.
