WACO, TX (News Release) - The Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks squandered early scoring opportunities against Baylor Saturday evening dropping a 48-0 decision at Floyd Casey Stadium in Waco. The loss drops the two-time defending Southland Conference champions to 1-2 on the season, while the No. 19 Bears improve to 2-0.
The Lumberjacks recorded 207 yards of total offense, while the Bears finished the game with 545. It was mistakes that hurt SFA early. The Lumberjacks turned the ball over deep in BU territory on their first three drives, and were penalized nine times for 52 yards.
After receiving the opening kick, the Lumberjacks moved the ball into Baylor territory. SFA got the ball down to the Bears' 24-yard line after a 36-yard pass to junior Cordell Roberson before the drive stalled out and the 'Jacks turned the ball over on downs.
Following a Baylor field goal, the Lumberjacks once again appeared to be on the move. Junior Jeremy Barnes recorded a career-long 50 yard run to put SFA on the Baylor 30, but after having a touchdown run called back due to a penalty, Baylor picked off a Brady Attaway pass inside the BU 10-yard line. Baylor converted the miscue into a touchdown to take a 10-0 lead.
It was a similar scenario on the 'Jacks' third drive. SFA moved the ball down inside the BU five-yard line before turning the ball over. The Bears responded with an eight-play, 96-yard drive that ended with a Robert Griffin pass to Aaron Jones to take a 17-0 lead. The Bears scored on their first five drives to take a 31-0 lead into halftime.
The game was delayed approximately 30 minutes late in the first half due to lightning in the area. The inclement weather led to halftime being canceled and the third and fourth quarters originally scheduled to last 12 minutes each.
Baylor would scored 17 more points in the third quarter, increasing their lead to 48-0 before another lightning display led to the game being called with 2:48 remaining in the third quarter. Both teams agreed to have the final minutes of the quarter rolled off to make it an official game.
Attaway completed 8-of-13 passes for 101 yards and one interception while Barnes led SFA in rushing with 58 yards on five carries. Roberson led the team in receiving with 43 yards on two receptions.
The Lumberjacks return to action Saturday when they host Texas State. The game against the Bobcats is slated to begin at 6 p.m. from Homer Bryce Stadium.
