NACOGDOCHES, TX (KTRE) - SFA opened the science, technology, engineering, and mathematics STEM Center Sunday evening.
Interdisciplinary research is one of SFA's prime focuses, and the center will address this need through linking STEM research with other studies at the school.
The center will increase research and education in these disciplines.
The university hopes the new area will address the demand for a technologically advanced workforce and learning environment for students and teachers.
"Stephen F. Austin State University takes ownership today in the national reform effort for STEM education," said SFA STEM Research and Learning Center Director, Kimberly Childs. "We realize that as a nation we're in trouble. There's an urgency to recruit STEM majors."
SFA says the STEM Center's mission is to research, teach, learn, and outreach. The center's opening is a part of the nation's call for reform and needing to recruit and retain more science, technology, engineering, and mathematics majors.
