CENTER, TX (KTRE) -

A jury trial has begun for a Center Police detective accused of lying under oath to a grand jury.

Joey Duane Haley, 37, is charged with aggravated perjury.

Opening arguments began after a jury was selected around 2 p.m.

According to a July KTRE report, Haley was being investigated for his testimony at that month's grand jury hearing. Haley testified on his investigation of a fight between two Shelby County deputies, which led to an indictment of Desmond McDaniel, for assault of a peace officer.

Nacogdoches attorney John Heath is representing Haley. John R. Smith is representing the Shelby County District Attorney's Office.
