WELLS, TX (KTRE) -

The Wells Volunteer Fire Department helped raise awareness to elementary school children during Fire Prevention week.

Firefighters visited Headstart through second grade students who've been studying about fire.

Firefighters displayed their sirens, hoses and fire trucks.

The department is also hosting "Adopt-a Firefighter" to raise money for much-needed gear for the volunteers.

"Well, it's a wonderful feeling to let people know and give them awareness in case something does happen. So, that when tragedy comes they can answer to it. And, they know when tragedy comes, we show up on the scene we're there to help," said Josh Luellen, Wells VFD Chaplain.

The volunteer fire department hopes to raise $2,500 for each of the 20 firefighters.

The tax-deductible donations will help the crew purchase new bunker and woodland gear.
