Lufkin man accused in shooting over cellphone tracked down in Minn.

LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) - Minnesota authorities managed to track down a Lufkin man accused of shooting another man in the leg in a fight over a cellphone.

According to Lufkin Police, Cornius Deunte Kirkland, 22, was arrested in Carlton County, Minnesota. He was transported to the Angelina County Jail on Monday, where police served a warrant of aggravated assault to him, in additon to three Class C misdemeanors.

According to a previous report, police responded to a call reporting a disturbance at 411 West Grove Avenue on July 4. When officers arrived, they found Andre Castle, 23, lying in the driveway of the residence, with a single gunshot wound to the thigh area of his left leg, according to a police report.

Witnesses told police that the victim had a verbal altercation with Kirkland, who used a handgun to shoot the victim once, the report stated.

One witness told police prior to the shooting, Kirkland was at the residence accusing Castle of stealing a mobile telephone.  The witness stated that Kirkland left after losing a fight with Castle, but returned about 20 minutes later, got out of a car, shot the victim with a handgun and then fled the area.
