NACOGDOCHES COUNTY, TX (KTRE) -

Nacogdoches City Council has adopted a proposed ordinance prohibiting the use of electronic messaging devices while driving inside city limits.

Tuesday night, council members approved the prohibition that includes text messaging, emailing, and the use of other applications that are used for electronic messaging.

Members outlined their reasoning in the written ordinance, stating "...safety of citizens of Nacogdoches is of utmost importance, and that distracted drivers are a danger to the safety of citizens."

The ordinance will take effect after signs are posted at each state highway entering the city. City Manager Jim Jeffers said that process should begin in the next two or three weeks.

Under the new law, violators could be fined up to $500.
