ANGELINA COUNTY, TX (KTRE) - An Angelina County deputy arrested a Lufkin man on a felony charge Thursday night after he reportedly tried to hide a child in his car during a traffic stop.

According to the arrest report, the deputy was in the Cedar Grove area when he saw a vehicle speeding. He stopped the vehicle around 10:30 p.m. and reported that the driver, Brian Alexander Rodgers, 27, had slurred speech and glassy eyes. The deputy also picked up a scent of alcohol from the vehicle.

The deputy had Rodgers step out of the vehicle and at some point during questioning, Rodgers asked the deputy how he knew his name, forgetting that the deputy had looked at Rodgers' driver's license, according to the report.

At one point, the deputy looked in the back of the vehicle and saw a five-year-old child on his knees in the floorboard, apparently trying to hide from the deputy, according to the report. The child did not have a car seat, according to the report.

Rodgers' girlfriend came to the scene and took the child and vehicle.

The deputy arrested Rodgers on a charge of DWI with a child, a state-jail felony. Bail has not yet been set for his release.

Rodgers was caught twice with driving with an unrestrained child, according to Angelina County Jail records.
