LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) -

A Lufkin man was arrested after crashing into a pole and then attempted to flee the scene.

According to the Lufkin Police Department, officers received at 7:23 p.m. Saturday night about a major accident in the 1900 block of East Denman Avenue. Witnesses at the scene reported that a man, driving a silver Ford pickup truck had driven into a pole on the side of the roadway. After he struck it, he then backed up and headed westbound toward South Medford Drive. Witnesses report the driver was in very bad condition after the accident, and they said his car broke down about two hundred yards west of the scene. Witnesses noticed the driver got out of his truck and fled into a nearby wooded area.

The report says witnesses flagged down officers when they arrived and informed them of the driver fleeing northwest of South Medford Drive into a wooded area. Officers found the driver hiding in low shrubbery near the edge of the wooded area, and identified him as 50-year-old Miguel Garcia of Lufkin. He was then arrested. Officers noticed Garcia to be intoxicated, and he was then booked into the Angelina County Jail for DWI and leaving the scene of an accident.

When he arrived at the jail, breath tests revealed Garcia was twice over the legal limit. This enhanced his DWI charge to a Class A misdemeanor.
