One Dead in Early Morning Accident

A two-car accident near Zavalla early Tuesday morning claimed the life of one man and sent two other to the hospital.

The accident happened on Highway 147 just outside Zavalla around 6:30am when a car crossed the median into on-coming traffic. According to police, a car driven by 45 year old Michael Summers of Katy, crossed the median and hit a vehicle in the opposite lane. That vehicle was driven by Jack Hooks of Zavalla. His passenger, 57 year old Carl Smith, also of Zavalla died on the scene. Some witnesses say the vehicle exploded on impact.

The two men who suffered injuries in the accident were taken to a Lufkin hospital. Michael Summers has been discharged to another hospital and Jack Hooks was also discharged.
