NACOGDOCHES COUNTY, TX (KTRE) -

A Nacogdoches man responsible for the death of a San Augustine man has pleaded guilty to the crime, accepting a 20-year prison sentence.

Shannon Eugene Clifton, 41, pleaded guilty in District Judge Ed Klein's courtroom to intoxicated manslaughter and intoxicated assault, accepting concurrent prison terms of 20 and 10 years.

Clifton, who was driving an 18-wheeler, was traveling eastbound on State Highway 21, east of FM 3276, in November 2010 when he crossed the center line, hitting a car that was traveling westbound. A witness said Clifton failed to stay within a single lane while driving.

The driver of the car, Dale Evans, 22, of San Augustine, was pronounced dead at the scene by Justice of the Peace Pct. 1 Kerry Don Williamson.

A passenger in the car, Jarius Jermaine Roberts was transported to a Nacogdoches hospital with critical injuries.

Clifton's criminal history likely played a part in his sentence, as he has previous convictions for assault, public intoxication and theft.
