NACOGDOCHES COUNTY, TX (KTRE) - Nacogdoches County Sheriff's deputies arrested a Lufkin man early Thursday after he allegedly wrecked into the back of an 18-wheeler on U.S. 59 South, tried to run away from the scene and fought with deputies when they caught up to him.
Sheriff Thomas Kerss said deputies went to the scene around 1:30 a.m. and caught up to George Benton, 49. Kerss said Benton began fighting with the two deputies and members of the Nacogdoches Fire Department assisted the deputies in restraining him.
Kerss said the deputies found Benton to be in possession of crack cocaine and PCP and they also found a gun in his vehicle, which is illegal as he is a convicted felon.
The deputies were treated for minor scrapes and lacerations.
Kerss said they suspect Benton was high on PCP.
Benton is charged with evading arrest, possession of a controlled substance and felon in possession of a firearm.
Benton felony conviction was for evading arrest in 2003.
