FRISCO, Texas - Senior post Jereal Scott was named to the preseason all-Southland Conference first team and the Lumberjacks were picked both second and fourth in a pair of league preseason polls, conference officials announced on Wednesday.
Scott was a automatic selection to the preseason first team after earning first-team all-league honors after his junior season, setting a new SFA single-season record by hitting 60 percent of hits shots from the field and averaging 13.3 points and 5.8 rebounds per game last year.
The Houston native posted three double-doubles as a junior and went over the 20-point mark three times as well, including a season-high 30 points in an overtime win over Texas State.
He was one of four automatic selections to the all-SLC first team, along with McNeese State's Patrick Richard, Northwestern State's William Mosely and Southeastern Louisiana's Brandon Fortenberry. UTSA's Jeromie Hill, last year's SLC freshman of the year, rounded out the all-league first team.
In addition to Scott's preseason accolades, the Lumberjacks were also picked as high as second in the SLC West with three first-place votes in the SLC Sports Information Directors poll behind UTSA, the reigning SLC Tournament champions.
The `Jacks were also selected fourth in the West in a poll of the league's coaches, receiving one first-place vote and totaling 42 points to come in behind league-favorite UTSA, Texas State and UT-Arlington.
In the East, defending league champion McNeese State was the runaway favorite in the SID poll with seven first-place votes, while Northwestern State picked up four-first place votes and was named the favorite among the coaches.
SFA returns four letterwinners from last year's team that went 18-11 overall, and 9-7 in the Southland Conference.
The Lumberjacks will open up the season on Nov. 11 at home when they host Centenary at William R. Johnson Coliseum.
