Exchange student Lene Claussen looks to win swimming title for Nacogdoches

NACOGDOCHES, TX (KTRE) - The Nacogdoches Dragons swim team is already one of the best in East Texas thanks to coach Carrie Scroggins. The Dragons boast many district titles over the years and this season they have found a secret weapon, Lene Claussen.

Claussen is a foreign exchange student who traveled more than 5,000 miles from Germany to Nacogdoches, Texas.

In Germany it is not typical to have school teams, instead they swim for clubs or as individuals. So school pride is a new concept and experience for Claussen.

"You are really an important part of the school and you have do a really good job not only for you but for the school," said Claussen. "I am really proud to be on the swim team and enjoy it."

Claussen was modest when asked about her skills saying that she "isn't too bad at swimming." Coach Scroggins was a little more honest saying that Claussen has been a boast both in and out of the pool for her team.

"She is fortunate to be around what I think are really great people," said Scroggins. I think she has made some really great life long friends so it has been a positive experience and we have gained from getting to know her."

Claussen's best event is by far the 100 yard fly. She won the event and the 100 yard breast stroke at a dual meet with Huntsville earlier this month. At the Dragon Invitational in October she placed 3rd in 2 races out of 16 swimmers.

"She has a great chance at making it to regionals and beyond," said Scroggins.
