"My favorite is toffee nut latte."
"I love lattes."
"White chocolate mocha."
"Double tall vanilla non-fat latte."
If you ask these coffee drinkers, they'd say black coffee is boring coffee. Special mochas, cappuccinos, and lattes are what everyone is drinking, but when you add all the creams, sugars and milks, you also add on the calories…
"I get non fat whipped, whipped."
…turning a low calorie, non-fat drink into a diet saboteur.
"For example, by adding the whipped cream, you add 130 calories, 12 grams of fat, and 8 grams of the bad saturated fat," says dietitian Mandy Jefferson. Mandy says some of your favorite coffee drinks can add up to 600 calories to your daily diet -- and that's just if you drink a low-cal drink once a day.
"If you get one of the drinks that's about 500 calories and you drink it three times a day, that could be the total amount of calories a woman should have in just one day." Your average mocha has 290 calories and 18 grams of fat -- that's more fat than a McDonald's cheeseburger. Your average latte has 180 calories and 10 grams of fat -- that's more fat than in a Krispy Kreme glazed twist. If you add creamer, that's 80 calories more and 4 grams of fat. That's the same as a pat of butter.
So the lesson here is this: you can drink your coffee, but if you're on a diet, moderation has to be key along with making healthy choices.
"Ask them to use the skim milk, use sugar substitutes, and leave off the whip cream," says Mandy. Starbucks also offers Adkins Diet drinks and can tailor your order to be non-fat.
