Supreme Court opts not to review Lufkin Industries appeal

LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) - The U.S. Supreme Court has denied an appeal from Lufkin Industries to review a class-action discrimination lawsuit against the company.

The denial of a writ of certiorari essentially means there will be no more delay in the company paying $5.5 million in backpay to employees who say they were denied promotions in the company due to their race.

Lufkin Industries filed the appeal to the Supreme Court in September, and the court denied the writ on Monday, according to the Supreme Court website.

Employees of the company filed the lawsuit in 1997 and a judge ruled in favor of the plaintiffs in 2009.
