NACOGODCHES, Tx - Freshman center Porsha Roberts scored a career and team-leading 12 points in a balanced SFA scoring attack to help the Ladyjacks get past Grambling State, 71-53 Wednesday evening at the William R. Johnson Coliseum.
SFA (2-0) also received double-digit scoring efforts from Tammara Marion (10 points) and Courtney Conwright (10 points). The Ladyjacks outshot the Lady Tigers (1-1) from the field, 46 percent to 36 percent, and used the three-point shot to their advantage. SFA went 8-of-12 from beyond the arch compared to only 2-of-12 shooting from three-point territory by Grambling State.
Just as was the case in the season opener at ULM, the Ladyjacks got another tremendous performance from their bench by outscoring the Lady Tigers 31-12.
After a relatively close first 15 minutes, the Ladyjacks closed the first half strong by going on a 16-1 run, which included two of Ashlee Mells' three three-pointers on the evening. Conwright also scored eight of her 10 points on the night in the first 20 minutes while contributing four assists.
The cushion created at the end of the first half by SFA proved to be too big of a gap for GSU to overcome and SFA's lead never dipped below 14 the entire second half.
With two made three-pointers Wednesday, Marion moved closer to becoming the all-time leader in made three-pointers in SFA history and now needs only two trifecta's to match the mark of Dayna Redd's all-time mark of 178.
The Ladyjacks will be back in action on Saturday, Nov. 19 when they host Wiley College at 6 p.m.
